5 Summer Maintenance Tips For Your Home

Winter weather can have a harsh effect on your home.  Not to mention, a lot of projects get delayed during colder weather.  Now that the weather has warmed up it’s time to check your home for any damages, issues or potential problems.  Here is a list of a few summer maintenance tips to keep your home in tip-top shape.

1.  Pressure Wash

It’s imperative that you protect your home against mold and mildew before it turns into a bigger issue.  The summer is an excellent time to pressure wash exterior surfaces to remove dirt, grime, and mildew that has built up.  Key areas to check for pressure washing include your home’s exterior, decks, pool areas, and driveways.

2. Clean Gutters

We all know that clogged gutters can lead to serious issues.  This includes water overflowing into unwanted areas and damaging fascia or soffit boards, eroding landscaping or even causing leaks in roofing.  Now is the time to get out and clean your gutters to avoid any potential damage to your home or property.

3. Stain Decks

Chances are you will be spending more time outside of your home during the summer months.  Whether this includes hanging out on your front porch, back porch, or relaxing by the pool, you may want to take a good look at any of the wooden surfaces to see if they need to be refinished. Regular staining and maintenance of your decks will make it more visually appealing. More importantly,  staining protects against rotting and warping and extends the life of your outdoor space.

4. Clean Windows

Cleaning windows is a task that is often forgotten or delayed because it can be monotonous and well, not a lot of fun.  However, regularly maintaining your windows is important to your home’s overall visual appearance and upkeep.   Putting it off will only result in more buildup of dirt and grime.

5. Examine Wooden Structures

It’s never a bad idea to check your home for potential or existing issues.  This is especially true for wooden surfaces that are susceptible to rot or damage.  Now is a good time to examine any wooden structures, such as steps, decks, and siding.  Look for loose or rotten boards or protruding nails that could be a safety issue.

There always seems to be a long “to-do” list, but maintaining your home should be a priority.   Routine upkeep can help to ward off costly repairs down the road.  Take a few minutes to walk the perimeter of your home and inspect for any changes or damages that need to be addressed.  If you’re not sure what to look for or your findings seem a little overwhelming, don’t be afraid to ask for help from a qualified professional.
